JCU Cairns Students to take on the Navy

JCUSA Sport & Recreation are happy to announce that JCU students from the Cairns Campus will take on the Navy in a variety of sports in semester 2.

In a historic event for the Cairns Campus, the students will take on the Navy in indoor soccer, netball, beach volleyball, indoor cricket and dodgeball.

The event is based on the Uni v Army event that is held at the JCU Bebegu Yumba Campus, Townsville annually.

Much like the Uni v Army event, the Navy event will honour the large naval base located in Cairns as well as strengthening the bonds between the University and Navy communities.

JCUSA Sport and Recreation Manager Jason Conn is proud to announce this historic event.

“It is with great excitement to announce this event with the HMAS Cairns.  We have seen how big the Uni v Army event is in Townsville and we wanted to showcase an event similar for our Cairns students and we thought having an event with the Navy was the most logical choice”.

“The aim for this event is to be held annually to build on the bonds between the university and navy.  We want this to be an event that everyone looks forward to each year”.

“In JCUSA Sport & Recreation, our plan is to expand on what we offer across the Cairns Campus through new programs and services which in the long term will be equal to our Townsville Campus.  Not only is the Uni v Navy event part of this development/expansion, but this day of competition also gives our Cairns based students the chance to represent JCU in sport in the region."

A spokesperson from the Navy (HMAS Cairns) said they are also looking forward to this event.

“We are excited to holding this event with JCUSA Sport & Recreation”.

“It is going to be a great day of sports showcased in the Cairns region between the Navy and University”.

The event will take place on Wednesday August 4 at the Shark Cage (Cairns Indoor Sports).

All games will be held from 8am-1pm.

JCUSA Sport & Recreation will be looking for Cairns based students to compete in this event.  Details on how to express your interest will be made in the near future.
