JCUSA Committees

JCUSA committees give students another way to contribute to student representation, share their experiences and work on issues that matter to the JCU community.

You do not need to be an elected councillor to express interest in joining a committee. Each committee works with the relevant councillor and reports to the Student Council.

Portfolio committees

JCUSA is currently establishing six portfolio committees:

• International Students Committee
• Postgraduate Committee
• Women’s Committee
• First Nations Committee
• Equity and Diversity Committee
• Environmental and Sustainability Committee

These committees will help portfolio officers hear directly from the students they represent, identify shared concerns, develop activities and make recommendations to the Student Council.

The committees are at different stages of development. Terms of reference, membership arrangements and planned activities will be shared as they are confirmed. The Environmental and Sustainability Committee has already begun contributing to activities, while the remaining committees are still being established.

JCUSA is also considering ways for portfolio officers to be supported by appointed student representatives based in Townsville, Cairns and, where there is sufficient interest, other JCU locations. Further information will be published if these positions are formally established.

Clubs and Societies Committee

The Clubs and Societies Committee is a standing committee of JCUSA and a working group of the Student Council.

The committee helps oversee JCUSA’s responsibilities for affiliated Clubs and Societies. Its work includes:

• Considering applications for affiliation and reaffiliation;
  assessing Clubs and Societies grant applications;
• Reviewing grant acquittals and the use of approved funding;
• Supporting compliance with JCUSA policies and affiliation requirements;
• Maintaining oversight of the register of affiliated Clubs and Societies;
• Considering issues affecting affiliated Clubs and Societies; 
• Reporting relevant decisions and recommendations to the Student Council.
  
  

JCUSA is currently reviewing its Clubs and Societies policies and processes. The committee will help ensure that these remain accurate, practical, culturally appropriate and relevant to the needs of current clubs and students.

Opportunities to join portfolio committees will be shared as each committee is ready to accept members.

If you are interested in a particular committee, you can contact the relevant portfolio officer now to ask a question or express your interest. Expressing interest does not guarantee committee membership, but it will help the councillor understand where students would like to contribute.
