Maita Sherrin-Angouin

I’m a Bachelor of Arts student double-majoring in Political Science/International Relations and Sociology. I’m running for Women’s Officer because I want every woman on campus to feel safe, heard and backed.

I work at Ruth’s Women’s Shelter, and this year I founded The Women’s Project Cairns, a free community group that has grown to nearly 700 local women. I’ve learnt that the best support is built with women, not just for them, and that’s how I’ll approach this role.

My priorities:

  • Safety and support: clear, easy-to-find information on consent, DFV, and campus and local support services, plus stronger referral pathways.
  • Connection: regular, low-pressure events that help women find their people, especially first-years, mature-age, First Nations and CALD students.
  • Voice: an anonymous survey each semester, with the results reported back openly, so women’s priorities set the agenda rather than mine.
  • Opportunity: skills workshops and mentoring that build confidence and leadership.

As your Women’s Officer, I’ll listen first, act on what you tell me, and show up consistently.
