JCUSA Sport Update 14/04/20

 We would like to thank you all for your cooperation during this tough and challenging time.  There is a lot going on behind the scenes at JCUSA Sport so we would like give you an update on what is occurring in all of our programs. 

FISHER SHIELD

Current Sports – Water Polo, Basketball & Rugby

All sports for Fisher Shield for the rest of this semester have been cancelled for 2020.  This is due to a variety of reasons which includes the following:

  • Some National Sporting Organisations have delayed all activity for their sport from June 1 onwards which will be the beginning of SWOTVAC.
  • The availability of officials for the competition.
  • The availability of facility use at JCU.

NEW SPORT

As an alternative, we will be introducing NBA 2K20 on XBOX One.  These games will be held on Wednesday’s on April 29 and May 6 with the final on May 13.  There will be both a men’s and women’s competition with the men’s competition featuring NBA teams meanwhile the women’s competition will feature WNBA teams.

INTERFACULTY SPORT

Table Tennis

The inaugural table tennis competition has now concluded.  The first three weeks of competition went ahead as planned however the final week of competition was held online.  The final overall Interfaculty winners will be announced later this week. 

Touch Football

At this stage, the touch football competition will remain postponed.  We have not cancelled the competition yet as we have already begun the competition and we do hope to finish the competition this semester however this will depend on a variety of factors including the changes to Social Distancing laws and the availability of referees.  We will review this decision on May 1. 

Soccer

Interfaculty Soccer has been cancelled for 2020.  This is due to a variety of reasons which includes the following:

  • Some National Sporting Organisations have delayed all activity for their sport from June 1 onwards which will be the beginning of SWOTVAC.
  • The availability of officials for the competition.
  • The availability of facility use at JCU.

NEW SPORT

As an alternative for Interfaculty Soccer, we will be introducing FIFA 20 on XBOX One.  These games will be held on Thursday’s on April 30 and May 7 with the final on May 14.  There will be both a men’s and women’s competition.  The competition will feature the men’s and women’s international teams.

GUNYARRA CUP

Current Sports – Netball and Soccer

Both sports will be cancelled for 2020.  This is due to a variety of reasons which includes the following:

  • Some National Sporting Organisations have delayed all activity for their sport from June 1 onwards which will be the beginning of SWOTVAC.
  • The availability of officials for the competition.
  • The availability of facility use at JCU.

NEW SPORT

We are looking to provide an alternative eSport competition to the students.  We are currently working with the colleges in Cairns to determine the preferred eSport and dates.  Stay tuned for more details. 

SOCIAL SPORT

Social Sport has remained cancelled until further notice.  If Social Distancing Laws change which allows us to put Social Sport back on, JCUSA Sport will resume Social Sport until Week 13. 

If we are able to resume Social Sport this semester (e.g. can play in weeks 11-13), Social Sport will only be open for students who have not requested a refund.  There will also be no Social Sport winners for this semester. 

UNISPORT NATIONALS

League of Legends

The League of Legends team has been finalized and will be competing in the competition which starts this weekend (April 18).  We will keep you updated with results throughout the competition. 

Indigenous Nationals

Indigenous Nationals has been cancelled for 2020.  The event has been rescheduled to occur in Newcastle in June/July 2021.  Final dates to be confirmed in the future.

Nationals Div 1 and Div 2

At this stage all UniSport Nationals Events from August 1 onwards will go ahead as planned.  With the event to occur in Perth (as well as budget constraints), we will be sending a small squad to compete at the competition.  At this stage will be sending women’s netball and women’s rugby 7s teams.  If you are interested in competing at the competition (in particular another sport), email [email protected]

SPORTING FACILITIES

All sporting facilities on both campuses are closed.  JCU Security are currently monitoring all these sporting facilities to ensure that no one is using them. 

We do have other plans to provide content to our students as well as ways to remain active during this time.  These details will be made in the near future.  We currently running Rec Sessions on Monday-Friday from 11am as well as live streaming group fitness classes from 5:30pm Monday-Friday.  Be sure to get involved with these programs for the time being.
