Debbie Powell to provide her expertise to the JCU Women’s Water Polo Team

JCUSA Sport are happy to secure the services of Debbie Powell for the JCU Women’s Water Polo side.

Debbie is royalty in water polo circles.  Debbie was one of the first women’s water polo players to represent Australia back in 1976 and represented Queensland for nearly 10 years.  She is the current women’s water polo coach for Townsville Water Polo and last year coached the Queensland Country Women’s side.  Debbie was recognised for her contributions to water polo by being inducted into the Water Polo Queensland Hall of Fame and also carried the Queen’s Baton through Townsville in the lead up to the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

Debbie also officiated the Fisher Shield Water Polo competition earlier this year.

Debbie is keen to pass her knowledge and experience onto the women’s water polo team that will compete at UniSport Nationals Div 1.

"I look forward to being involved with the preparations for the JCU Women’s Water Polo side at Nationals".  “Last year was the first time JCU had sent a Water Polo side to Nationals since 2011 so we are looking forward to seeing how the team can improve on from last year”.

“I enjoy passing on my skills and knowledge onto the next generation and to see the passion that JCUSA Sport has to grow the sport on campus is great for water polo in our region.”

JCUSA Sport and Recreation Manager Teisha Condie is thrilled to have Debbie on board.

“Having someone like Debbie with the credentials she has is a huge coupe for JCU”.

“The girls last year did a really good job while up against some tough opposition and we are looking to match that as well as improving on what we did in 2018”.

Debbie will work alongside men’s water polo coach Ian Moss (who will also coach the women’s water polo side at the event) to prepare for Nationals.

The women’s water polo team will be competing at UniSport Nationals Div 1 from September 29 – October 4.
