JCU Competes with the best at UniSport 2018 Nationals Div 2

From the 2-6 of July, JCU competed at the 2018 UniSport Nationals Div 2 on the Gold Coast.  This is a new format implemented this year replacing the Northern and Australian University Games.  Teams are required to finish in the top two to compete at Div 1 next year.  During the week, JCU competed in men's and women's basketball as well as women's water polo.  Here is how they went:

Women's Basketball

For the first time since 2009, JCU sent away a women's basketball team.  Our girls played great throughout the tournament.  The girls finished the pool games with four wins and two losses to finish third in the group progressing through to the quarter finals.  This included a big 54-2 win of International College of Management Sydney.  Unfortunately, the girls went up against a very good University of Queensland side going down 55-26 who shot the lights out in the first quarter (University of Queensland went on to win silver).  Overall the girls played great in a tough competition to finish 8th.

Men's Basketball

Our men's basketball team did start the tournament slowly losing their first two games however they were able to bounce back to win their remaining pool games to progress through to the Round of 16 to play against the University of Queensland.  It was a great quality game with neither side getting the upper hand.  The game came down to the last shot.  Down by two with 5 seconds to go, JCU shot a three pointer to potentially win the game however the shot rimmed in and out to lose 31-29 in the most cruelest way!  The guys did go on to finish 15th with many of the team already training for next year!

Women's Water Polo

Just like our women's basketball team, it has been a while since JCU has sent away a women's water polo team as 2011 was the last time we sent a team.  Although it was a small competition, the quality of the competition was there.  JCU showed that they could match it with other universities as they made the bronze medal match against Griffith University.  Although they went down to them in the pool rounds, there was a lot of optimism that JCU could get the job done.  The bronze medal game was exciting and high quality with both goalkeepers making big saves.  Unfortunately for JCU, Griffith were the ones that were able to make their chances count with the final score 6-2.  Our water polo girls can keep their heads held high finishing fourth.
