The University has announced that the 2027 Academic Calendar will be amended to restore a dedicated study break before end-of-trimester examinations.
From 2027, students will have a minimum of 5 calendar days without lectures or classes before each end-of-trimester examination period. Exams will commence from Thursday of the examination week, while Week 10 teaching and the mid-trimester lecture recess will remain.
JCUSA welcomes this outcome and acknowledges the University’s willingness to listen to students, engage with the concerns raised, and amend an otherwise disappointing process in which many students originally felt unheard. While this is not a full restoration of the previous SWOTVAC structure, JCUSA considers it a meaningful and positive response to student feedback.
JCUSA would like to thank every student who provided feedback, attended forums, signed petitions, contacted the Association, wrote to the University, or otherwise shared their perspective. The volume, quality and sincerity of student feedback allowed JCUSA to advocate more effectively for the student body and helped demonstrate the importance of protected preparation time before exams.
This outcome also shows the value of constructive student engagement. JCUSA appreciates the diligence shown by the University in reconsidering the issue and working towards a solution that better recognises student learning, wellbeing and experience. We hope this can form part of a stronger approach to student-focused decision-making moving forward.
JCUSA remains open to receiving feedback from students regarding the updated arrangement. Students who wish to share their thoughts, concerns or reflections are encouraged to continue contacting the Association so that we can understand how this outcome is being received across the student body.
JCUSA also notes that we are still awaiting further substantive communication regarding the proposed Laboratory and Technical Services changes. We remain committed to continuing discussions with the University on that matter and to ensuring that student voice, student learning and student experience remain central to any future decisions.

JCUSA will continue to work constructively with students, clubs, societies, JCU UniLife and the University while maintaining its role as the representative student body.
Students have raised concerns regarding the removal of Study Vacation / SWOTVAC from the 2027 Academic Calendar.
Concerns raised include:
- examination preparation;
- compressed teaching and assessment periods;
- placement scheduling;
- fatigue and workload management;
- financial pressure; and
- student wellbeing.
JCUSA is seeking clarification from the University regarding the rationale for this change, what consultation occurred, and whether further student feedback can still be considered
Students have raised concerns regarding the proposed Laboratory and Technical Services changes where these may affect practical learning and the broader student experience.
Concerns raised include potential impacts on:
- laboratory and field-based teaching;
- technical support;
- specialised facilities and equipment;
- live-animal-supported learning where relevant;
- placements and work-integrated learning;
- research training; and
- hands-on practical experience.
JCUSA is also aware of significant student concern regarding potential impacts on veterinary diagnostic laboratory services and related teaching, practical training, research support and specialist technical expertise. These concerns will be considered as part of JCUSA’s broader response to the proposed Laboratory and Technical Services changes where they relate to student-facing impacts.
JCUSA is seeking clarification from the University regarding the student-facing impacts of the proposal, what consultation occurred, and what mitigation is being considered.

JCUSA attended the Townsville student forum hosted by Prof. Mitch Parsell, Deputy Vice Chancellor Education, regarding the removal of Study Vacation / SWOTVAC from the 2027 Academic Calendar.
The University has indicated that it is actively considering student feedback and exploring options regarding the 2027 Academic Calendar. No final outcome has been communicated at this stage.
JCUSA will continue to monitor the process, collate student feedback and await the University’s formal response.
Following recent discussions between JCUSA, JCU UniLife representatives and the Education Division, JCUSA welcomes the University's decision to hold dedicated student forums regarding the removal of Study Vacation (SWOTVAC) from the 2027 Academic Calendar.
During discussions, the University acknowledged the significant volume of feedback received from students and recognised concerns regarding consultation and communication around the Academic Calendar changes.
While no final outcome has been determined, the University has advised that student feedback remains an important part of its ongoing review of the matter. Students are encouraged to participate in the upcoming forums and continue sharing their experiences, concerns and perspectives.
JCUSA remains committed to representing student concerns in a constructive manner and will continue working with the University to ensure student voices are heard and considered throughout this process.
The University has indicated that further consideration of the issue is ongoing and that a formal response to student concerns will be provided following the current engagement activities.
