The JCU Student Association has formally adopted motions responding to student concerns regarding two current matters:
1. The removal of Study Vacation / SWOTVAC from the 2027 Academic Calendar; and
2. The proposed Laboratory and Technical Services changes where those matters may affect students.
JCUSA is now seeking clarification from the University, opening pathways for student feedback, and engaging with relevant student groups, clubs and representatives.
Students who wish to raise concerns, share experiences, or provide feedback on either matter are encouraged to contact JCUSA directly.

- Your course, campus, discipline or study mode if relevant,
- How you believe you are affected, and
- Whether you are comfortable with your feedback being anonymised and raised through representative channels.

This page provides a central reference point for JCUSA’s current response to student concerns regarding the 2027 Academic Calendar and the proposed Laboratory and Technical Services changes.

- JCUSA’s current position;
- Key background information;
- Current actions being taken;
- Ways students can provide feedback; and

Students have raised concerns regarding the removal of Study Vacation / SWOTVAC from the 2027 Academic Calendar.
Concerns raised include:
- examination preparation;
- compressed teaching and assessment periods;
- placement scheduling;
- fatigue and workload management;
- financial pressure; and
- student wellbeing.
JCUSA is seeking clarification from the University regarding the rationale for this change, what consultation occurred, and whether further student feedback can still be considered
Students have raised concerns regarding the proposed Laboratory and Technical Services changes where these may affect practical learning and the broader student experience.
Concerns raised include potential impacts on:
- laboratory and field-based teaching;
- technical support;
- specialised facilities and equipment;
- live-animal-supported learning where relevant;
- placements and work-integrated learning;
- research training; and
- hands-on practical experience.
JCUSA is seeking clarification from the University regarding the student-facing impacts of the proposal, what consultation occurred, and what mitigation is being considered.
JCUSA has heard significant concern from students regarding both matters.
JCUSA believes that where major changes affect students, students deserve:
- clear communication;
- meaningful opportunities for feedback;
- transparent decision-making; and
- appropriate consideration of student impacts.
JCUSA has resolved to acknowledge and echo the concerns being raised by students, seek clarification from the University, and provide accessible ways for students to raise concerns directly through the Association.
JCUSA is currently:
- seeking clarification from relevant University representatives,
- asking what consultation occurred with students or student representatives,
- gathering student feedback directly through the Association,
- engaging with relevant student groups, clubs and organisers,
- attending or arranging meetings where appropriate,
- considering further representational action depending on the information received.
JCUSA has published a formal statement outlining Council’s adopted position, the concerns raised by students, and the actions now being progressed by the Association.
